I only use my VM for Vellum, a few days every month or two, when it's time to produce a book. Performance isn't perfect (there's a barely perceptible lag), but it's tolerable, and much better than the cloud VM's lag. It was a little tricky to set up the VM, but there are good tutorials out there, like this one: I've published about 12 books using Vellum this way so far (ebook and print versions). So I installed Oracle's free VM VirtualBox on my Windows computer, downloaded a free copy of macOS Sierra 10.12, purchased Vellum, and I've been happily using it ever since. I first tried running it on a cloud-based macOS virtual machine, but it was laggy and cost money for time on the VM, and I didn't like the ticking meter feeling, which was costing me ~$30/month. Vellum is great, but it only runs on Macs.
